Billionaire Bill Gates, philantrophist and cofounder of Microsoft has been an outspoken voice in the fight against the coronavirus.
During a time when people are calling for the rich to step up in ways they’ve never done before, he’s dedicated to being one of those who make a difference.
Bill Gates says that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are prepared to invest billions in funding factories who will develop a COVID-19 vaccine. Apparently Inovio Pharmaceuticals, which is backed by the Gates Foundation, is about to commence a second vaccine trial. This trial will test the vaccine on humans.
“Our foundation is trying to be as helpful in a very constructive way as possible. And that’s why I’ve talked to the head of the pharmaceutical companies. We’ve talked to a lot of the agencies, including CDC and NIH, about how we work together on the vaccine and the drugs,” Bill explained on CBS This Morning just last week.
Donations of $100 million have already been made by The Gates Foundation to help battle against the virus. Bill firmly believes that without a vaccine we will not return to life as usual. Of course, these investments don’t come with any guarantees. No doubt a lot of money will be spent on ideas which won’t work initially until the right solution is found.
Bill explained on the Daily Show with Trevor Noah that “Our early money can accelerate things. Of all the vaccine constructs, the seven most promising of those, even though we’ll end up picking at most two of them, we’re going to fund factories for all seven, and just so that we don’t waste time in serially saying, ‘OK, which vaccine works?’ And then building the factory.”
