Animals can very often display unique attributes around humans – this particular story is an excellent example of such behavior!
Nan Hauser has been studying whale behavior for over 28 years. Her studies brought her in direct contact with these majestic mammals every time she dived into their environment. She had seen all aspects of their behaviour pattens, but never experienced an encounter like the one she had on a trip to the Cook Islands in the South Pacific.
Nan and her film crew were there to research and record a group of humpback whales. Little did Nan and her team know, they were about to film an encounter unlike anything they had ever experienced before.
As she studied the huge creatures, one of them approached Nan and began to nudge her along in the water.
“He just wouldn’t stop touching me,” Nan said. “I tried to get away over and over again, but he kept at it. He eventually pushed me up right out of the water on his fin. He kept putting his eye right next to me and I couldn’t figure out what he was trying to tell me. ”
After some time Nan began to feel unsafe and thought the whale meant to cause her harm.
“I thought the camera crew was going to end up filming my death,” she said. “One whip of a whale’s tail on you, and the pressure would break your bones.”
But unknown to Hauser, there was something more sinister lurking in the water below and the whale was in fact trying to protect her. Out of the corner of her eye she caught a glimpse of a tiger shark swimming sround them.
She now realized the whale was trying to protect her from one of the most fearsome predators in the sea.
“I was absolutely sure I would die,” Nan wrote on Facebook
The whale took Nan on his fin and swam with his back to the boat. When the humpback got close enough, Nan was able to make her move and jump back into the boat.
“I just put my hands on my face and started crying,” Nan said. “I can’t say whether they were tears of relief that I was alive, or because I had just experienced the most incredible thing I have ever seen in my life.”
Whales have been documented for their selfless acts to protect other species from danger in the ocean. Nan’s experience is the first documented case of whales acting to save a human life.
“Even though it was an absolutely crazy experience, I feel so honored to have had it happen,” Nan said. “It’s an incredible quality that they’ll go rushing into a dangerous situation for the sake of someone else.”
The incredible footage below even shows when Nan is finally safe and what the whale does at that very moment. Watch the video and immerse yourself in the mesmerizing scene unfolding in the deep blue sea. It’s astounding!
