Even though he suffered years of abuse and got cut out of Jerry Lewis’s will, one of his sons would just like to have the chance to tell his father that he loved him. Unfortunately, the famous comedian passed away in August 2017, meaning his son would never get that chance. Anthony Lewis has since spoke out about how he had to endure both physical and emotional abuse at the hands of his father. “He wanted nothing to do with me,” Anthony Lewis told Inside Edition. “I knew that I wasn’t going to get anything but the real sticking point, the dagger in my heart is for the grandchildren.”
Lewis who in his lifetime amassed an estimated $50 million fortune, made very sure that his will did not include any of his five sons. He decided to give them absolutely nothing and disinherit them.
The sons were from Lewis’s first marriage to Patti Palmer, whom he married in 1944 and subsequently divorced in 1980.
Anthony Lewis was their fifth son, born in 1959. Their youngest had lost his life in 2009 after an apparent drug overdose.
Anthony admits that his lived his life in fear and was terrified every night. He was constantly in fear growing up, not knowing what version of his father would walk in the front door after work.
“When he would show up and park right in front of the big front door, my mom would get on the intercom and say, ‘Your father is home!’ We scattered. We could never predict his behavior on a given day,” Anthony said.
He described how his father would beat him with his belt on several different occasions. But it was not only the physical abuse that scarred him for life, his father also used vicious emotional that ruined his life.
“He was emotionally abusive every day,” he said.
During their childhood, the Lewis family lived like kings and queens at their mansion in Bel-Air, California.
“It was the highest echelon of Hollywood —the absolute highest,” he said. “My father was the top box office draw on planet Earth.”
As the years went by, Jerry Lewis distance himself from his family, not wanting anything to do with them. This caused a lot of strife in the family circle. Finally, Anthony decided to file a lawsuit against his father for his mother. She had been married to Jerry for over 38 years.
“Do I let my mother go on the streets or do I sue my father?” Anthony said.
His father did not take the lightly and fought back hard. He decided to disinherit his son! When Jerry Lewis died, only two of his sons were permitted to attend his funeral. He had cut all contact with his first family and wanted nothing to do with them.
Anthony, Gary, and Ron were not invited to the funeral. But brothers Scott and Chris were welcomed to attend. But every single brother was shut out of the will, regardless of if they got a funeral invite or not.
Lewis left his multi-million-dollar estate to his second wife and their adopted daughter.
Anthony did not get a single dime from his fathers will. But he is saddened that he never got the chance to fix the rift between them before his father passed away.
“I am really sorry I didn’t have any one-on-one time to express that I loved him,” he said.
