Two days before her 94th birthday, Juanita Fitzgerald from Eustis, Florida, was arrested by police for trespassing. Fitzgerald had failed to pay her $161 rent on time and consequently no longer allowed to live in her assisted living facility.
The elderly was handcuffed and removed from her apartment, without even being able to take any of her personal possessions.
“Everything I got is gone,” she cried while in handcuffs.
Her bail was set at $500, however she was released by stating her recognizance and did not have to spend her 94th birthday locked behind bars. On December 15, 2017, Juanita met with The Mid Florida Homeless Coalition and thankfully got accommodation in a motel. If not for the help of this great organization, Juanita would have been on the streets after her release.
“We’re working with her to try to accommodate her as soon as possible,” the organization’s board member, B.E. Thompson, said.
According to staff at the senior living facility, Juanita had refused to pay rent because she would be dying soon. She also turned down help to find new housing when offered. Juanita stated that she had offered half of what she owned in an attempt to pay but her offer had been refused.
Thankfully, Juanita is now getting plenty of help to rectify her current living situation.
A good samaritan from Florida has also set up a goFundMe page to help Juanita get back on her feet. To date they have raised close to $2000 for the elderly woman.
Do you think this was a disgraceful act by not only law enforcement, but by the elderly care facility?
